The Falcon and the Magpies

Rev. Jo Cotton recently attended the Creative Writing Retreat led by Eddie O'Connor.

We are privileged to share one of the beautiful stories that emerged from her time on retreat.

The Falcon and the Magpies

By Jo Cotton

It was a blue-sky morning and the falcon was gliding through the air.

Set on its flight path, it was suddenly attacked from above by two magpies. They were continuously dive bombing the falcon, earnestly trying to disrupt its flight.

The Falcon’s reaction to this bombardment from the magpies was to continue flying straight, gliding along on the wind.

It did not speed up to get away and it did not retaliate.

It continued to fly true and straight, seemingly unbothered by their attacks.  Soon the magpies gave up and flew away.

For the Falcon, handcrafted and held up by God, knew that God was the wind beneath its wings. The One who keeps it on its flight path, especially in times of trouble or disturbance.        The Falcon trusted the One who had made it.

So, when the magpies come, and they will come, remember the Falcon and hold true to the One who handcrafted you and holds you up and continue on the straight and true path. For our God is always with us.

Psalm 46: 1,7.  God is our refuge and strength an ever-present help in trouble. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
